How to Manage a Break in Service Using Life Cycle Management

A break in service may occur when a faculty member steps away from their position. If the faculty member will remain in the same Series upon their return, you may “restart” their Professional Journey by creating a record of their separation then restarting their appointment.

Step 1: Revise the current appointment through the user interface

Select the current appointment (note the end date on the current appointment contract).

End the contract for the current appointment by adjusting the contract expiration date.

Notice how the appointment information is no longer visible on the faculty member’s profile since the contract has ended (see under Actions > Past Appointments) to view the historical record). 

Step 2: Upload the Appointment file

Update existing "Appointments” items should be unchecked.

Note the contract start date must be later than the end date for the initial appointment. In this example the new contract must start after 6/5/2020 (here we have used 6/14/2020).

Step 3: You now must manually update the Professional Journey (timeline)

We need to update future events on the faculty member’s timeline to reflect the new contract start date. In this example, all of the events need to be pushed back (extended) 

Select Timeline Options > Add Exception Event 

Below we’ve added an exception event with a Start Date the same as the contract start date. 

Select Preview Impacted Events to review the impacted timeline before saving.
