Add an Exception Event for Faculty
Faculty careers do not always follow a single, standardized timeline. Lifecycle Management (LM) supports this reality by allowing administrators to adjust an individual faculty member’s progression without altering the series template or affecting others in the same rank. When an appointment is created, LM applies the predefined schedule of ranks and events from the chosen series template, but administrators can modify this schedule as needed to reflect real circumstances.
Accelerated exception events are commonly used when a milestone can occur within a permitted range. For example, if a promotion may happen anytime between year three and year five, an accelerated exception event can shift that milestone to year 3. When applied, LM automatically realigns all future events to match the earlier milestone. Some institutions also use acceleration to represent experiential credit or prior service.
Add an Exception Event
- Navigate to the Faculty page and click the name of the desired faculty member to navigate to their faculty information page.
- Select Timeline Options > Add Exception Event to navigate to the Add Exception Event page where you will fill out the form.

The start date of the exception event must occur before any events affected by the timeline adjustment. Additionally, the end date of the exception event must precede the start date of any existing events.

How do you want to change the timeline? Clients have the flexibility to either accelerate the entire timeline (move events earlier) or extend it (keep subsequent events unchanged).

Accelerated Exception Event
An accelerated exception event shortens an individual faculty member’s timeline by moving a scheduled milestone earlier. Institutions commonly use this when a milestone has an eligible range rather than a fixed year. For instance, a faculty member may be allowed to pursue promotion anytime between year 3 and year 5. If the default timeline places the promotion event in year 5, an accelerated exception event can move that promotion to year 3. When this adjustment is applied, all subsequent events automatically realign to reflect the earlier promotion year.
Some institutions use accelerated events to reflect experiential credit or prior service. When applied this way, LM may display earlier milestones as 'canceled' and shift them to the end of the timeline. This may affect how clearly the faculty member’s progression is represented on the timeline

- Click Preview Impacted Events to view a list of all events affected by the exception. On the right side of the page, you'll find a list displaying both the current and new dates for each event.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save when finished.
This information cannot be edited after adding the exception event. If further changes need to be made after creating the exception event, a new event will need to be created or each event will have to be edited individually.
