Vita Builder: What propagates when a linked template is created?

When a linked template is created, it is expected to inherit changes from all templates above it in the hierarchy. Some changes should not be inherited. This article describes the expectations around propagating unit level, hierarchical templates.

Propagation Rules

  • Propagation only applies to Linked Institutional Templates. Personal and Unlinked templates do not inherit any changes.
  • Propagation proceeds through the entire hierarchy of linked templates.
    • For example, if there are 3 levels of linked templates created, then a change to the top level (Level 1) would be expected to carry through all templates in its hierarchy (Level 2 and Level 3).
  • Not everything propagates.

FAQ

What is the difference between Linked and Unlinked templates?

Linked Template: Changes to the source (reference) template apply to all linked and nested reference templates. Administrators can modify units and settings during creation, and linked templates can be customized (show/hide sections, reorder, update styling).

Source templates are not locked and updates to the source template will override these customizations.

Unlinked Template: Changes to an unlinked template do not affect other templates, and subsequent changes to the source template do not apply. While it inherits the source template's unit and settings, it remains independent and does not update with source changes.
